oxy commit records a subrepo pin moved by edits inside it without a word issue #162 closed: completed andymccall opened this · 0 comments

Reported by the tetriblox session (2026-11-03): editing files inside a subrepo's checkout (tblx-work/rstar-api, inside tetriblox) made the parent's next oxy commit record the subrepo as replaced: a pin bump nobody asked for, only noticed afterwards and undone by hand.

A pin is versioned like an opaque file (spec §5.5, §9.3), so a moved subrepo state is a real change to the parent; that part may be intended. What is missing is saying so. Two cases need a word at commit time:

  1. The subrepo's pin moved without oxy subrepo (or an explicit path) asking for it: oxy commit with no paths should name each subrepo whose pin it will record and how far it moved, and oxy status should list it as a pin change, not a plain replaced file.
  2. The subrepo has uncommitted edits of its own: the pin can only name a committed state, so say which state it records and that the edits stay in the subrepo.

Possibly: leave moved pins out of a bare oxy commit unless --pins (or the subrepo's path) is given, as a pin bump is usually its own change ("bump with make pins").
