A checkpoint is one blob holding every file graph, so reading it costs as much as the whole state and nothing can be loaded selectively. Payload version 2 (spec §11): each large file graph becomes a content-addressed blob of its own, shared across checkpoints when unchanged, named from an index; readers accept both versions.
