A Windows dev/test machine on Earth, and a WASM-tier Windows runner issue #83 open andymccall opened this · 2 comments

Andy (2026-10-25): use a Windows container for dev/test of a Windows runner.

Machine: dockur/windows on Earth: Windows 11 Enterprise evaluation in a QEMU/KVM VM inside a Linux container (2 cores, 6 GB, 64 GB disk in a Docker volume on /), web viewer and RDP on localhost only (an SSH tunnel to reach them). For dev/test only: the evaluation lasts 90 days.

Then:

  1. Run what we ship for Windows (the oh and oxy zips, built by dist with mingw and never run on Windows): oxy clone, status, commit, push; oh auth login, oh run list.
  2. A Windows runner offering the WASM tier: flow built for x86_64-pc-windows-gnu, the runner as on the phone (the WASM tier is the portable one; microvm and syscall stay Linux-only), with what is Linux-only in the runner (signals, statvfs, sysinfo, the syscall tier) behind cfg.
  3. Later, perhaps: a native Windows tier (a job object and an AppContainer), and Windows images for pipelines.

macOS (Andy, 2026-10-25): dockur/macos is QEMU on x86, so Intel macOS only, and Apple's licence allows macOS VMs only on Apple hardware, so not on Earth. Instead: a cheap M1 Mac mini, or an AWS EC2 Mac instance on Apple Silicon (a dedicated host, 24 h minimum) about once a month. On a Mac the runner can offer the WASM tier at once and, later, the microvm tier through Apple's Virtualization framework (the Linux images in fast VMs on Apple Silicon); our Intel macOS builds run there under Rosetta 2. An Intel macOS runner build is worth releasing too.

Step 2 works: flow builds for x86_64-pc-windows-gnu offering the WASM tier (syscall/microVM say they run only on Linux). In the Windows VM on Earth, flow.exe registered as runner windows-1 (label windows) and ran andymccall/windows-runner-demo's 120-step WASM job from the hub (run issue #1, passed in 102 s with a debug build). Not yet: free disk, load and kernel facts on Windows; self-updates on Windows; a release flow.exe in dist.
