Windows: oh is a built-in PowerShell alias (Out-Host) issue #319 closed: completed andymccall opened this · 1 comment

Found running oh 0.9.4's Windows build on the Windows VM (oxygenflow#83, 2026-10-26): in PowerShell, oh --version runs PowerShell's built-in alias oh (Out-Host) and fails ("A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '--version'"); oh.exe works. Every PowerShell user hits this on their first command.

Options, for Andy:

  1. Document oh.exe (and Remove-Item Alias:oh in the profile) — cheap, but a poor first experience.
  2. Ship a second name for Windows, e.g. ohub.exe, and say so in the release notes and help.
  3. The installer adds Remove-Item Alias:oh -Force to the user's PowerShell profile. Recommended: 2 and 3 together (a name that always works, and oh restored where the installer runs).

Decided (Andy, 2026-10-26): 2 and 3 together. Windows releases ship ohub.exe beside oh.exe (named in the release notes and help), and the installer adds Remove-Item Alias:oh -Force to the user's PowerShell profile so oh works where it ran.
